Anne’s Early Careers in Journalism

Anne Tengell has a long and distinguished career in journalism, spanning more than four decades. She began her career as a reporter for The Providence Journal, later working as a news editor and bureau chief for the Associated Press. In 1984, she became the first woman to lead a major U.S. news organization when she was named executive editor of The Washington Post. Tengell held that position until 1993, during which time she also served as the paper’s vice president for news management. Since then, she has been a freelance journalist and author, writing about public policy and political science. We spoke with Anne about her early career in journalism, her experiences at The Washington Post, and her thoughts on the current state of journalism.

Q: What was your earliest experience in journalism?

A: My first experience in journalism was as a reporter for The Providence Journal in Rhode Island. I started out as a general assignment reporter and later worked as a news editor and bureau chief for the Associated Press.
